What is Sleep Apnea?

Sleep apnea is a medical condition that disrupts sleep cycles caused by abnormal breathing habits. Patients usually fall under two categories of sleep apnea:

Central Sleep Apnea (CSA) occurs when the brain fails to send the correct signals to the muscles that control breathing during sleep, which leads to pauses that disrupt deep sleep.

Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) is a condition caused when something blocks the air passage, such as over-relaxed throat muscles or enlarged tonsils.

Mixed Sleep Apnea or Complex Sleep Apnea occurs when patients experience a combination of the aforementioned sources of their condition.

Early warning signs can be snoring, gasping for air while asleep, and severe daytime drowsiness or fatigue.

Risks Associated with Sleep Apnea

Pauses while breathing during sleep lead to a slew of complications, such as abnormal sleeping habits and failure to intake enough oxygen for normal body functions. Additionally, sleep apnea can lead to:

  • Increased Stress
  • High Blood Pressure
  • Heart Disease
  • Type 2 Diabetes

Sleep apnea can affect individuals operating heavy machinery, often making it dangerous to drive in public or to keep up focus and function during daily work and social interactions.

Get Diagnosed, Receive Treatment

Austin Park Dental allows patients to take home a portable sleep monitor device to test for potential risks. Data gathered through the sleep monitor is sent directly from the device to a local physician where a doctor will prescribe an oral appliance.

After the initial diagnosis, Dr. Lynn takes it from there; she uses an orophargynometer, an additional step in traditional sleep apnea treatment that utilizes sound waves to map the air passageway, and to measure the correct position of the jaw in order to alleviate symptoms. Dr. Lynn adjusts appliances to accurately address the source issue and find optimal jaw positioning for easy breathing.

Dr. Lynn then sends impressions to our local lab to create custom-fitted appliances. We offer several types of sleep apnea oral applainces, including SomnoDent®, Narval, Herbst, and EMA®.
